Marfa Sun 03:37
Well, what if we’re all that remains in this last remaining light? Oh this wanton wasteland, standing next to me You’ll be staying up all night This was the place in warmer days, We went swimming after dark In the twilight hues, I sang to you The way I’d done in all of them honky-tonks and bars I sang to you, I sang to you When your boyfriend saw, he broke my jaw - Anything you want me to Showed up in your parents’ car – top down And in that midday Marfa sun, your eyes were wide Down at that swimming hole - that’s where I’ll show you all the edges, baby Like rainfall in the embers, oh like Christmas in July, yeah maybe When your boyfriend finds out, he might hit me in the mouth - But not yet I’ll sing for you, I’ll Sing for you I may have bruised lungs but oh I got a silver tongue - Anything you want Singin’ I- How could I find you like that summertime, those were different days - We were out of our minds

Midnight Sun 05:52
The light kept shinin’ - all around And in the land of the midnight sun Everyone is right, is wrong. I never saw the bottom wishin’ at the well What you need you shouldn’t have to ask And when you find there ain’t nothin left for lightin’ - no Well you don’t have to mention there’s a match You said there’s nothing missing I said it won’t last You said there’s nothing missing - no Well there’s always someone, something the light has passed-on If I could find the weather I’d be out there on the track Singin’ “oh it can’t get any better” Pointin’ to the people in the cars And all the shadows that they cast Now I wanna get right ‘stead of wrong, but I’ve been so tired And it has been so long
3.
Desert Highway – drivin’ all night Radio dial has been out for a while Vacant truck stop off 105 I’ve been searchin’ for you Parking lot corners- flickerin lights Sun is up over Oceanside Back and forth I’ve been studying lines I went searchin’ it’s true Singin’ “Are you out there?” Front bulb out on the passenger side You told me to fix it like three or four times And the more I keep forgetting the more I’m reminded, I went searchin… Brand new transmission, after-market price Everything I told you, it was mostly lies Singin’ “Are you out there?” When you grabbed that suitcase, said “I’ll give the coast a try.” I went searchin into The blue

On the first day of Fall, you were tellin me it all you were looking down On the last day of Spring, you were sayin’ everything, yeah you were looking out This life, “what’s it for?” I don’t think about it anymore. I don’t dream about it anymore… Are you looking up? Are you looking back? Are you looking down? Are you looking all around? This life, I don’t know I don’t think about it anymore I don’t dream about it anymore No, I don’t I wish to start again Revisit the ends of things Tie up all them loose strings And sing a sigh of oceans wide The moment-to-moment, momentary things Bring back them rolled up balls of twine Just sit back – let that mess unwind This life, I don’t know…

Auden 06:23
I’ll love you dear I’ll love you till the words and melodies cease And that lighting we saw- We can never mind the awe It was just a flash of white heat (2x): first we heard a crash, then a flash of white heat Oh I’ll love you I’ll love you dear I’ll love you till the trees tear out of the ground And this world we know it all implodes and there is music, There is music all around
7.
Cadenzas 04:27
Oh, the daylight knows me Tells me every now and then And I recall her most of all All the way back to when The porch lights interrupted Mother stood outside to shout The sun would leave me there When the lighting bugs came out - All alone But I remember best of all when the warmth was always done - All the while - that country mile, I was hoping for that one And I do recall the dances Sweet cadenzas at high noon All the waking hours Passing much too soon Now the nightlight shows me - Tells me how the story ends I recall it most of all – all the way back till when that waking light disrupted Father stood downstairs, oh the night it had forgotten - All the people they came out of their homes Oh I still remember best of all The racing of the trains on that Northern Rail line Wheels rotating on the run I still recall the dances Of sweet December moons All those sleeping hours Passing much too soon
8.
Sailor Boy 02:30
Wish I was a sailor boy And I would know the winds With just a hint of nature’s wisdom Tacking to and fro - Serpentine coasts and splendorous seas And rocks and shores and wharfs and docks There’s a lonely light house calling out to me Carefully commanding the vessel Through the gales and waves and crests and treasure chests made out of space and air I would travel everywhere Ends of earth and ends of men Their beginnings and their mornings Stars and dreams and ports and starboards Stearns and screams and sails - its farther Ships bones creaking, vessels churnin’, ancient veins, daylight burnin’ The sea is a slate of obsidian, its meridians, they store my joy I’m a sailor boy

about

Jon Peterson is an alt/folk/minimalist singer-songwriter from Minneapolis, MN, who started the Arcola project as a senior in high school in 2006. Arcola’s debut self-titled release was released several years later on June 30th, 2013 on Posters on Walls Records, after Jon moved to Austin, Texas and met label originator Carter Francis. Arcola continued performing shows in Texas but transitioned into more of a back burner project in Jon's life when he moved back to Minneapolis, as the songs came slowly and the time to focus on the project decreased.

In early 2018, Jon met Adam Pearson, and the two began creating music in Jon's basement for months, slowly crafting licks, rhythms, and song seedlings. Their playing/listening sessions incorporated their shared love of jazz, noise rock, shoegaze, post-rock, and ambient alternative music. Forms and melodies began to emerge out of the hours of bass and percussion jams, while meanwhile, some of Jon's dormant acoustic guitar folk songs were introduced to the new band treatment. After a discerning search, Jon enlisted Minneapolis guitar sideman Danny Shaheen to bring his clean, dreamy, and sparkly guitar voice to the project. The trio assembled this collection of "Cosmic Americana" (as a friend of the band, Andy Stuhl called it) pieces with the help of multiple talented Twin Cities musicians (and one remote New York musician). Producer John Peters also returned to record and mix this record at Future Condo recording in Minneapolis.

"Midday makes me wish spring were the only season. These songs are fresh air and flourishing plant life and renewed road trip plans and a growing sense of possibility. Listen to the subtly perfect grooves of "Midnight Sun," "Passenger Side," and "Cadenzas." Or the moments of lucid serenity in "Sailor Boy" and at the end of "Marfa Sun." This is an album of few extremes but many gentle epiphanies.

I wish I could send Midday to myself ten years ago. Back then, in my high school years, I had more than my fair share of angsty soundtracks. But there were also the bands that urged me to hop on my bike and go exploring, that mimicked the way the warm wind felt on my face and the way my hometown looked during the golden hours: Band of Horses (their early years when they were good, before the Carissa's Wierd influence wore off), Grandaddy, The Wrens, Great Lake Swimmers, Mojave 3, Small Sur, The Velvet Teen, Weinland. Not that Arcola is exactly like any of these, but that when I hear these songs I feel the same expanding glow."
